GLEN SCOTIA

27 Year old single MALT

Chocolate and peat are vibrant in this delightful malt from one of the three remaining distilleries operating in Campbeltown, which showcases Glen Scotia’s distinguishing coastal character. Smoke teases on the nose, giving way to rich and complex barley. This leads into a juicy palate that proudly displays cocoa notes and light smoke. The finish is rich with phenols and crowned with an abundance of spice.

Glen Scotia The Perfect Fifth Whisky
  • Playful, teasing smoke offers an unlikely sharpness to the already busy barley. For its big age, this malt is alive and kicking; brilliant!

  • Sublime depth to the barley which is at its juiciest and glows as the cocoa notes bring out the best of the light smoke.

  • A bitter-sweet finale with the phenols swirling around and spices a-buzzing. No signs of tiredness at all as the barley still plays a big part while the oak offers both cocoa and a proud skeleton on which all else hangs.

  • Just adore that chocolate and light peat mix.

Reviews

“Typically Glen Scotia from those years, so extremely singular, with a lot of bread dough, leaven, proper yoghurt, sour cream, then really hectolitres of manzanilla.”

Region: CAMPBELTOWN

Though Campbeltown is a small, and relatively remote, settlement at the end of the long Kintyre peninsula, it was once home to over 30 distilleries – a whisky-producing powerhouse. Though a fall in demand during the 1850s - prompted by a number of factors, including improved transport links which allowed the northern distilleries to gain the upper hand – the produce of Campbeltown was still highly prized into the 20th century. Today, only three whisky distilleries remain, but they more than make up for this by producing a range of distinct malts, some adopting the smoky, oily character for which the region is beloved.

Distillery: GLEN SCOTIA

As one of only three distilleries remaining in the former whisky powerhouse of Campbeltown, Glen Scotia offers a taste of a historical Campbeltown dram: Especially given that the distillery boasts some features dating from the 1830s, including fermenters, dunnage warehousing and a stillroom.  Recent releases from Glen Scotia have been lighter and grassier than one might expect of a Campbeltown whisky, whereas older expressions, such as ours, epitomise the typical Campbeltown character of toffee, maritime influence, and just a hint of smoke.
